Navel Orange and Almonds Possibly the best snack in the world
Ingredients:
1 Navel Orange, the best ones are from Redlands California, IMHO 9 Almonds, more or less
New Taste Thinking:
I was listening to a registered dietician friend of mine giving a lecture / talk the other day. She mentioned that eating fruit is always a great idea and eating a couple of nuts with the fruit is also a great idea. The reason being is that the sugar in the fruit may spike your blood glucose level which could lead to an up and down energy effect. She explained that the fat and protein in the nuts will slow this effect and give you the energy and satisfaction you want from a snack.
Cut the top and bottom of the orange.
You can use your bottom teeth to scrape out the fruit from these two small pieces as the top of the navel orange has such a great and unique flavor.
Use a sharp knife to cut the peel from the orange.
Cut in a back and forth motion as you follow the natural curve of the orange.
Try not to cut too deeply into the orange as you want to remove the skin not the fruit.
Go all the way around the orange until all of the peel is removed.
At this point you can place the peeled orange in one hand and trim off any little pieces you may have missed.
Toss out the peel.
Place the orange back on the board.
Cut the orange in half from top to bottom.
Cut each half in half again, from top to bottom.
Keep the two quarters together and cut them across.
Each slice will produce two triangle like pieces.
Cut the whole orange into these pieces and place into a bowl.
Add a few nuts to the bowl and serve.
Take a test! If you find yourself getting hungry between meals give this snack a try. Make a little note of how you feel and think about your energy level. Try another kind of snack the next day. You may notice a difference or you may not. Either way you win.
Clearly people have been eating oranges for quite some time. The thing that makes this snack a little different is the cutting and presentation. So much of eating is presentation and this little extra effort makes it more fun and special, also easier to eat.
